Our Recruitment Process

Info Sessions | GSSA will host an info sessions in person and on Zoom discussing what GSSA is and the logistics of recruitment. Only one session should be attended.

Game Night | Prospective members will rotate around tables with various different games, meeting active members.

Application Submission | Prospective members will formally apply to GSSA.

DEI/Cultural Competency Event | Prospective members will rotate around tables answering prompts collectively.

Case Hackathon | Invited applicants will brainstorm solutions to real-world issues in global surgery in a group setting.

Interviews | Invited applicants will be interviewed by board members.

Final Task | Invited applicants will complete a final, fun task.

Thank you for your interest in joining GSSA! Our Winter 2025 application has officially gone live, and will be due on January 22nd at 8pm. Make sure to check for upcoming events and have the interest form all filled out to remain on our email list! As always, any and all recruitment updates will additionally be posted to our Instagram page.

FAQ's

What is the average time commitment?

The time commitment for Michigan GSSA looks different for each and every one of our members. All members are expected to attend our 1-hour long general meetings each week, alongside fulfilling their coffee chat, social, and community service requirements (which may vary in duration). Moreover, if you choose to join a committee within GSSA, additional time commitment need may be introduced depending on your role.

Does GSSA have a membership fee?

Yes, all members of our chapter are expected to contribute a $50 fee toward our organization fund when they initially join. However, there are varied options to accomodate this cost upon speaking with our Director of Finance, such as implementation of monthly payments or fee reduction!

Do I need to be pre-med or pre-health to join?

Of course not! While GSSA is an organization affiliated with the School of Public Health and one that explores healthcare topics as our main focus, any and all majors are welcome to apply. Check out our Homepage for a distribution of our members' declared majors.
