Romir Jha is a junior majoring in Medical Anthropology and minoring in Religion. He aspires to have a career in medicine with an interest in palliative care, critical care, and global health. Romir is passionate about confronting global health inequities with intention and is a member of the Referral System for Ectopic Pregnancy project at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, aiming to address delays in ectopic pregnancy care in Ghana. He studies the impacts of gender-affirming care bans on transgender youth at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. In Ann Arbor, he volunteers with Hospice of Michigan and is involved with Buddhism at the University of Michigan. Romir spends his downtime reading, watching and playing sports, playing piano, and enjoying nature.
Nathalie Tsimhoni is a junior double-majoring in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and Philosophy. Her career aspirations lie at the intersection of pediatrics, ophthalmology, and global surgery. Nathalie is deeply committed to global health equity, education, and environmental justice. She serves as project manager for the Referral System for Ectopic Pregnancy project at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana, which seeks to improve outcomes of ectopic pregnancy by minimizing delays in care. Additionally, she is a member of a team working to articulate community engagement and clinical ethnography to improve mental healthcare in Lima, Peru. In Ann Arbor, Nathalie studies age-related macular degeneration in the Miller Lab at Kellogg Eye Center and volunteers with the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition and the Kellogg PACU. In her free time, you can usually find Nathalie reading, playing violin, drinking tea, or studying at the Law Library.
Angelina Hamati is a junior majoring in Biochemistry with a minor in Philosophy, pursuing a career in surgery, education, and global health. Serving as a Lay First Responder (LFR) Fellow, she is deeply committed to advancing health equity, a passion she has explored through various research and service initiatives. Angelina and other members of GSSA designed the C-Section Patient Education Project at St. Paul’s Hospital in Ethiopia, aiming to minimize surgical site infection. As a first-generation Arab American, Angelina is especially passionate about Arab health and leads a team working to promote health literacy of chronic disease within Arab populations. She conducts research on neuroinflammation in diabetic retinopathy at Kellogg Eye Center, and also volunteers with Safety-Town Pop-Up and as a catechist. In her free time, Angelina enjoys listening to music, dancing, spending time at coffee shops, and relaxing with friends.

Ethan VanHoose is a senior pursuing a dual degree in Molecular, Cellular, & Developmental Biology and Movement Science. He envisions a future in orthopedics or ophthalmology, embracing the principle ‘Think Global, Act Local.’ He aspires to provide surgical services within his local community while actively promoting discussions on global surgery access, health education, and community engagement. On campus, Ethan conducts research in the Miller Lab at the Kellogg Eye Center, focusing on modeling age-related macular degeneration through cell culture. He is also a member of the Mobility Team Project, aiming to identify and implement best practices for building rapport to encourage patient mobility within the University of Michigan Hospital. Beyond research, he shares his passion for anatomy by serving as a teaching assistant at Michigan Medical School and tutors students from local under-resourced communities through Wolverine Pathways. In his free time, Ethan can be found live broadcasting the Wolverines sporting events through WCBN Sports, experimenting with new recipes, and studying in the SKB.
Annie Minkova is a junior majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Spanish Language. She aims to pursue a career in pediatric surgery, hoping to involve herself in global health topics related to child development in her future. On campus, Annie studies the forced response model of implicit racial biases in the Jonides Cognitive Neuroimaging Lab and works as a Development intern at C.S Mott and Von Voigtlander hospitals. Alongside GSSA, she’s involved in two ongoing global health projects under Michigan Medicine staff involving Ghanaian and Rwandan capacity building programs, as well as other student organizations on campus such as M-HEAL and the Undergraduate Psychology Society. In her spare time, you can find Annie volunteering at the hospital’s Critical Care Medical Unit, teaching Spanish at the Bach Elementary School, tutoring beloved organic chemistry, or camping out at Shapiro until midnight.
Anam Noor is a junior majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Writing. She hopes to pursue a career at the intersection of pediatrics, global health, and neurosurgery. At the University of Michigan, she conducts research in the Mattis Lab, where she studies dysfunctional neural circuits that might be implicated in epilepsy and how they can be ameliorated. Beyond the lab, she can be found volunteering in the Neurosurgical ICU at Michigan Medicine or promoting childhood literacy through her work with the Children’s Literacy Network. In her free time, Anam enjoys reading or writing in cozy cafes, baking at home, and exploring new places around the world.

Kayla Haddad is a junior majoring in Biology, Health and Society (BHS) with a minor in Entrepreneurship. While exploring her career interests in plastic surgery and sports medicine, she works as an orthopedic surgery clinical assistant and volunteers as a vaccine clinic organizer. Kayla is passionate about confronting global health needs, acting as a member of the Referral System for Ectopic Pregnancy Project at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, aiming to minimize delays in ectopic pregnancy care in Ghana. Additionally, she works on a team aiming to increase chronic disease health awareness in the Arab American population. On campus, she conducts research at the Dus Lab assessing the stress response in drosophila embryos as a result of changes in parental diet. In between classes, Kayla volunteers on the University of Michigan Medical Campus and at Ann Arbor Public Schools. She also serves on the board of multiple cultural and professional organizations, intersecting her passions for healthcare and community engagement. In her free time, you can find her at various pilates classes, studying with friends, watching sports and taking long walks around campus.
Alex Mamonov is a junior majoring in Biology, Health, and Society. His ultimate career goals remain in orthopaedics in conjunction with global surgery. Alex’s passions lie in the domain of research inclusion and education with an emphasis on each person’s ability to contribute to research, especially in the field of global surgery. He is currently a Research Intern in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, working on multiple clinical research projects with various physician mentors. In his free time, Alex loves spending his time working on these clinical research projects, attending Michigan sporting events, and being active outside with activities like mountain or road biking.
Shreya Srihari is a junior majoring in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology with a passion in the intersection of oncology, global surgery, and women and children's health. She hopes to pursue a medical career focused on expanding equitable access to surgical and cancer care. On campus, she’s involved in cancer epigenetics research at the Rogel Cancer Center, studying chromatin accessibility in Ewing sarcoma. She is also involved in a project in collaboration with Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the University of Ghana, working to improve access to minimally invasive gynecologic procedures through simulation-based laparoscopy training. Beyond research, Shreya works with the Patient Education and Health Literacy team at Michigan Medicine to develop patient-centered materials, tutors organic chemistry, and volunteers at Mott Children’s Hospital. In her free time, you can find her painting, walking in the Arb, listening to music, or hanging out with other GSSA people.
Francesca Butsch


Director of Events
Francesca Butsch is a senior double majoring in Biology, Health and Society (BHS) and Spanish. Committed to global health and education, she envisions a future profession that integrates surgery, language, and community engagement. While still exploring careers, Francesca enjoys volunteering in the pediatric surgical and trauma recovery unit at University Hospital and participating in adapted sport and recreational activities for children with disabilities in the Cleveland area. At the University of Michigan, alongside GSSA, she is involved with Friends of Guatemala, a student organization that tutors indigenous students in Seacacar, Guatemala via Zoom. She also works in the Seeley Lab, where she studies the pancreas-gut-axis and effects of bariatric surgery and medications on obesity-related comorbidities. In her free time, Francesca can be found learning how to play the guitar, whipping up a quick espresso, attending a football game or running around Ann Arbor.


Dr. Robin Petroze, MD
Club Advisor
Dr. Petroze is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa.
She currently serves as the Vice Chair for Global Surgery for the Department of Surgery. A previous National Institutes for Health Fogarty International Clinical Research Fellowship awardee and then mentor, Dr. Petroze continues to focus her research, teaching, and advocacy on access to equitable care in underserved populations both internationally and domestically.
