Elise is a senior majoring in Neuroscience with plans to pursue a career in medicine. She is passionate about the intersection of science, patient care, and global health, with a particular interest in understanding and addressing neurological diseases that impact communities worldwide. Elise serves as a Marketing Fellow for the Global Colorectal Surgery Education Initiative (GCSEI) and is a board member of Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, where she supports health education, advocacy, and outreach efforts. Off campus, Elise works as a personal care assistant, gaining valuable experience in patient-centered care and the day-to-day realities of healthcare delivery. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors, concerts, reading, and exploring new restaurants and coffee shops.

Romir is a senior studying Medical Anthropology and Religion. He hopes to pursue a career in medicine with interests in end-of-life care, palliative medicine, religion in healthcare, community health, and global health. Romir is passionate about anticolonialism and is committed to confronting healthcare inequities with intention. He is a member of Project RSEP, a team working to improve care for ectopic pregnancy patients in Accra, Ghana. He is also currently pursuing an honors thesis focused on the embodied experiences of patients, family members, and staff in hospice care in Southeast Michigan. Romir has also spent time studying the detrimental impacts of gender-affirming care bans on youth and their families in Ohio. Around Ann Arbor, you can find Romir at local coffee shops, volunteering with the Hospital Elder Life Program, enjoying live music, and spending time in nature. In his free time, he enjoys birding, basketball and running, learning about ancient history, meditation, and watching Michigan sports.

Nathalie Tsimhoni is a senior double-majoring in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and Philosophy. She hopes to pursue a career in medicine at the intersection of global health, ophthalmology, pediatrics, and women’s health. Nathalie is deeply committed to health equity, education, and social and environmental justice. She serves as project manager for Project RSEP, a team seeking to improve care for ectopic pregnancy patients at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra, Ghana. Additionally, she is a member of the UM/KBTH Pediatric Eye Trauma Study Team, an intern at Corner Health, and a 2026 LFR International Fellow. In Ann Arbor, Nathalie studies age-related macular degeneration in the Miller Lab at Kellogg Eye Center and volunteers with the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition, SafeHouse, and the Kellogg PACU. In her free time, you can usually find Nathalie reading, playing violin, visiting coffee shops with friends, or playing board games.

Diya Gehlaut is a senior majoring in Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience, with a minor in Business, at the Ross School of Business. She hopes to pursue a career in medicine, focused at the intersection of healthcare, business, and policy, with interests in addiction medicine, pediatrics, and community and global health. Diya is a member of GSSA’s Project RSEP, a team working to improve care for patients with ectopic pregnancy at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana. She also conducts substance use policy research and works in the Psychiatric Emergency Services department at Michigan Medicine, where she has developed a strong passion for improving access to behavioral healthcare and advocating for vulnerable patient populations. In her free time, you can find Diya cheering at game days, playing a game of pickleball, exploring Ann Arbor with friends, or curled up with a good book.

Ian is a junior majoring in Biology with strong interests in medicine, leadership, and community engagement. He is actively involved in GSSA, AISES, MedAchieve, and the Native American Student Association, where he enjoys building community and supporting student involvement through service and collaboration. Ian also works on the JUMPS project team in collaboration with Dr. Simone Dundas Byles and Dr. Garfield Badal, two of Jamaica’s premier pediatric surgeons, gaining experience in global health and surgical care initiatives. He hopes to pursue a future career as either an emergency medicine physician or orthopedic surgeon, combining his passion for science and patient care with his desire to make a meaningful impact in healthcare. Outside of academics, Ian enjoys spending time outdoors, listening to music, exploring new places, and hanging out with friends.

Shailesh Gullipalli is a senior pursuing a double major in Sociology and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology along with a minor in Pharmacology. He hopes to pursue a career at the intersection of clinical medicine and policy leadership. Shailesh is a research assistant in the Isom Lab, where he studies cardiac arrhythmias and sodium channel dysfunction in animal models of Dravet Syndrome. He also researches variation in law enforcement presence across Michigan emergency rooms and its implications for healthcare delivery. Through GSSA, he is part of JUMPS, a project team that collaborates with pediatric surgeons in Jamaica to support post-hurricane recovery efforts through fundraising and research. He also works as a CNA in a memory care facility. In his free time, you can find Shailesh cooking, working on fantasy football trades, playing volleyball, or scrolling Tik Tok in Shapiro while pretending to study.

Kayla Haddad is a junior majoring in Biology, Health and Society (BHS) with a minor in Entrepreneurship. While exploring her career interests in plastic surgery and sports medicine, she works as an orthopedic surgery clinical assistant and volunteers as a vaccine clinic organizer. Kayla is passionate about confronting global health needs, acting as a member of the Referral System for Ectopic Pregnancy Project at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, aiming to minimize delays in ectopic pregnancy care in Ghana. Additionally, she works on a team aiming to increase chronic disease health awareness in the Arab American population. On campus, she conducts research at the Dus Lab assessing the stress response in drosophila embryos as a result of changes in parental diet. In between classes, Kayla volunteers on the University of Michigan Medical Campus and at Ann Arbor Public Schools. She also serves on the board of multiple cultural and professional organizations, intersecting her passions for healthcare and community engagement. In her free time, you can find her at various pilates classes, studying with friends, watching sports and taking long walks around campus.

Alex Mamonov is a senior majoring in Biology, Health, and Society with plans to pursue a career in medicine. His interests revolve around orthopaedics in conjunction with global surgery. Alex’s passions lie in the domain of research inclusion and education with an emphasis on each person’s ability to contribute to research, especially in the field of global surgery along with addressing disparities in healthcare, especially globally. He is currently a Research Intern in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, working on multiple clinical research projects with various physician mentors and a patient care technician at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. In his free time, Alex loves spending his time working on these clinical research projects, attending Michigan sporting events, cooking new recipes, and being active outside with activities like mountain or road biking.

Maeha is a senior majoring in Biochemistry and Biophysics with plans to pursue a career in medicine. She is particularly interested in emergency care and neuroscience, and is currently exploring these fields through her work in the emergency department at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and her involvement in scientific research studying Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3, a neurodegenerative disease. On campus, she is a part of multiple healthcare-focused organizations that place strong emphasis on global and local health, community service, and sustainable engagement. Outside of school, Maeha loves to read, bake, and visit self-serve froyo shops with her friends.

Sophia is a senior majoring in Movement Science and Intraoperative Neuromonitoring with a minor in writing. She aims to pursue a career in healthcare with interests in pediatrics, preventative medicine, and global health. Additionally, she aims to incorporate her passions for medical education and sustainability into her profession. On campus, you can find Sophia conducting Lipodystrophy research in the NCRC, working in the hospital, or raising money for wildlife conservation on the Diag. In her free time, Sophia likes to read, hang out with friends, try new restaurants, and attempt to get back into arts and crafts.

Dr. Robin Petroze, MD

Dr. Petroze is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa.

She currently serves as the Vice Chair for Global Surgery for the Department of Surgery. A previous National Institutes for Health Fogarty International Clinical Research Fellowship awardee and then mentor, Dr. Petroze continues to focus her research, teaching, and advocacy on access to equitable care in underserved populations both internationally and domestically.
